Sustainable materials and exquisite design merge in one breathtaking necklace. Thinly-sliced tagua nuts are collected from the rainforest floor, carved, dyed, and etched by women in Colombia to create knockout works of wearable art.
Since the year 2000, entrepreneurs Ana Piedrahira and Javier Cardenas have been working with low-income women artisans to improve their lives for the better. Their fair-trade enterprise, Sapia, employs thirty-two women, with over fifty more working as independent contractors -- each receiving a living wage for her work.

*CUSTOMER REVIEW: I am a big fan of ‘earthy’ jewelry, nothing flashy or ‘bling’. I like the natural look and so the Tagua Nut Necklace immediately caught my eye at Hip Mountain Mama! First things first: I have a big head. It doesn’t LOOK that big because my hair nicely shields my oversized melon (I can’t even wear baseball hats my head is too big!). I was concerned since the necklace does not have a clasp that I would not be able to fit it over my head No worries there though! I was very pleased that the necklace is adjustable and you can alter the length of it to suit your needs (or if you have a big head like me, to fit it over your head). I am really impressed with its durability. I have a nine-month-old, so anyone who has had a baby knows that if you are going to wear anything on the upper region of your body, it better be able to withstand being pulled, yanked, and chewed on. And trust me, this necklace has endured all of that and then some! You could never tell that my daughter has used this necklace as a chew toy on a regular basis! Not a single scratch or tooth mark has appeared (and at nine months, she already has eight teeth!). I admit…I am often too lazy to take my jewelry off when I shower. Since the day I got the necklace, I have yet to take it off to shower and there is no fading at all in the necklace and the rope is just as durable as ever. Overall, I absolutely love this necklace. Since it is earthy and neutral colors, it matches absolutely everything I own! I have gotten quite a few compliments on it and I always pass on the word that I got it from Hip Mountain Mama!! ~Lauren
